Forex Currency Trading Explained -- Fx Trading

FX or Forex, currency trading is the trading of one currency against another. In terms of trading volume, the currency exchange market is the world's largest market, with daily trading volumes in excess of $1.5 trillion US dollars. This is orders of magnitude larger than the bond or stock markets. The New York Stock Exchange, for example, has a daily trading volume of approximately $50 billion. Currencies are traded for hedging and speculative purposes. Various market participants such as individuals, corporations, and institutions trade forex for one or both reasons. Corporate treasurers, private individuals and investors have currency exposures during the the regular course of business. The FX Trade Platform is an ideal platform to hedge any such exposure. An investor, who has bought a European stock and expects the EUR exchange rate to decline, can hedge his currency exposure by selling the EUR against the USD. Currency markets are ideally suited for speculative trading. The foreign exchange market has a daily volume in excess of 1.5 trillion USD, which is 50 times the size of the transaction volume of all the equity markets taken together. This makes the foreign exchange market, by far, the most liquid and efficient financial market of the world. Thanks to its efficiency, there is little or no slippage of market price for the execution of even large buy and sell orders. Traders are able to take advantage of intra-day volatility thanks to the low spreads and enter positions for short time periods, such as minutes and hours. Unlike equity trading, where restrictions limit a trader's ability to profit from a market down turn, there are no such constraints on currency trading. Currency traders can take advantage of both up and down trends thus increasing their profit potential. The most commonly traded currencies are: USD, EUR, JPY, GBP, CHF, CAD and AUD.The most commonly traded currency pair is EUR/USD.Forex Symbol Guide Symbol Currency Pair Trading Terminology GBP/USD British Pound / US Dollar "Cable" EUR/USD Euro / US Dollar "Euro" USD/JPY US Dollar / Japanese Yen "Dollar Yen" USD/CHF US Dollar / Swiss Franc "Dollar Swiss", or "Swissy" USD/CAD US Dollar / Canadian Dollar "Dollar Canada" AUD/USD Australian Dollar / US Dollar "Aussie Dollar" EUR/GBP Euro / British Pound "Euro Sterling" EUR/JPY Euro / Japanese Yen "Euro Yen" EUR/CHF Euro / Swiss Franc "Euro Swiss" GBP/CHF British Pound / Swiss Franc "Sterling Swiss" GBP/JPY British Pound / Japanese Yen "Sterling Yen" CHF/JPY Swiss Franc / Japanese Yen "Swiss Yen" NZD/USD New Zealand Dollar / US Dollar "New Zealand Dollar" or "Kiwi" USD/ZAR US Dollar / South African Rand "Dollar Zar" or "South African Rand" GLD/USD Spot Gold "Gold" SLV/USD Spot Silver "Silver" CURRENCY PAIRSAll currencies are assigned an International Standards Organization (ISO) code abbreviation. In currency trading, these codes are often used to express which specific currencies make up a currency pair. For example, USD/JPY refers to two currencies: the US Dollar and the Japanese Yen. SPOT FOREX Spot foreign exchange is always traded as one currency in relation to another. So a trader who believes that the dollar will rise in relation to the Euro, would sell EUR/USD. That is, sell Euros and buy US dollars. The following is guide for quoting conventions: What does it mean to be "long" or "short" a currency?Being long means buying a currency. Being short means selling a currency. If a trader goes long USD/JPY, he or she buys US Dollars and sells Japanese Yen. Buying a currency is synonymous with taking a long position in that currency. A trader takes a long position in a currency if he or she believes it will appreciate in value. If a trader goes short USD/JPY, he or she sells US Dollars and buys Japanese Yen. Selling a currency is synonymous with shorting that currency. A trader would short a currency if he or she believes it will depreciate in value.CURRENCY TRADING: BUYING AND SELLING CURRENCIESAll Forex trades result in the buying of one currency and the selling of another (currency trading), simultaneously. Buying ("going long") the currency pair implies buying the first, base currency and selling an equivalent amount of the second, quote currency (to pay for the base currency). It is not necessary to own the quote currency prior to selling, as it is sold short. A trader buys a currency pair if he/she believes the base currency will go up relative to the quote currency, or equivalently that the corresponding exchange rate will go up. Selling ("going short") the currency pair implies selling the first, base currency, and buying the second, quote currency. A trader sells a currency pair if he/she believes the base currency will go down relative to the quote currency, or equivalently, that the quote currency will go up relative to the base currency. An open trade or position is one in which a trader has either bought or sold one currency pair and has not sold or bought back an adequate amount of that currency pair to effectively close the trade. When a trader has an open trade or position, he/she stands to profit or lose from fluctuations in the price of that currency pair.Forex is the backbone of all international capital transactions. Transactions in foreign currencies take place when one country's currency is purchased (exchanged) with another country's currency. Major commercial banks in the money market centers throughout the world are responsible for the majority of foreign currencies bought and sold. In EUR/USD, a movement from .8951 to .8952 is one pip, so a pip is .0001. In USD/JPY, a movement from 130.45 to 130.46 is one pip, so a pip is .01. CALCULATING THE WORTH OF A PIP How much in dollars is this movement worth, for example, per 10,000 Euros in EUR/USD? How much is one pip worth per 10,000 Dollars in USD/JPY? We will refer to the size, in this case 10,000 units of the base currency, as the "Notional Amount". The formula for calculating a pip value is therefore: (one pip, with proper decimal placement / currency exchange rate) x (Notional Amount) Using USD/JPY as an example, this yields: (.01/130.46) x USD 10,000 = $0.77 or 77 cents per pip Using EUR/USD as an example, we have: (.0001/.8942) x EUR 10,000 = EUR 1.1183 But we want the pip value in USD, so we then must multiply EUR 1.1183 x (EUR/USD exchange rate): EUR 1.1183 x .8942 = $1.00 This is in fact a phenomenon you will see with any currency in which the currency is quoted first (such as EUR/USD or GBP/USD): the pip value is always $1.00 per 10,000 currency units. This is why pip (or "tick") values in currency futures, where the currency is quoted first, are always fixed. Approximate pip values for the major currencies are as follows, per 10,000 units of the base currency: USD/JPY: 1 pip = $.77 (i.e. a change from 130.45 to 130.46 is worth about $.77 per $10,000) EUR/USD: 1 pip = $1.00 (.8941 to .8942 is worth $1.00 per 10,000 Euros) GBP/USD: 1 pip = $1.00 (1.4765 to 1.4766 is worth $1.00 per 10,000 Pounds) USD/CHF: 1 pip = $.59 (1.6855 to 1.6866 is worth $.59 per $10,000)SpreadThe spread is the difference between the price that you can sell currency at ( Bid) and the price you can buy currency at ( Ask). The spread on majors is usually 3 pips under normal market conditions. Market HoursThe spot Forex market is unique to any other market in the world; trading 24-hours a day. Somewhere around the world a financial center is open for business and banks and other institutions exchange currencies every hour of the day and night, only stopping briefly on the weekend. Foreign exchange markets follow the sun around the world, giving traders the flexibility of determining their trading day and the ability to take advantage of global economic events.FOREX or The Foreign exchange rate market is an international market where various currency exchange transactions take place; this is in the shape of simultaneously buying one currency and selling another. The most commonly traded currencies are referred to as “Majors”; over 85% of daily transactions on Forex trading involve the Majors. These seven currencies are the US Currency (Dollar, USD), Japanese Yen (JPY), Euro (EUR), British Pound (GBP), Swiss Franc (CHF), Canadian Dollar (CAD) and Australian Dollar (AUD). The Forex system in operation today was established in the 1970s when free currency exchange rates were introduced, this period also saw the US Dollar overtake the British Pound as the benchmark currency. Prior to this and in particular during World War II, exchange rate remained more stable. Forex trading in simplest terms is the buying of one currency and the selling of another. Forex trading, also referred to, as “FX” is open to corporations, small businesses, commercial banks, investment funds and private individuals, it is the largest financial market in the world averaging a daily turnover of over $1 trillion dollars, making it a diverse and exciting market. It is a 24-hour market enabling it to accommodate constant changing world currency exchange rates . According to New York time, trading begins at 2.15pm on Sunday in Sydney and Singapore and progresses through to Tokyo at 7pm, London at 2am and reaches New York at 8am. This leaves investors free to respond to global political, economic and social events when they take place, day or night. Unlike trading on the stock market, the forex market is not conducted by a central exchange, but on the “interbank” market, which is thought of as an OTC (over the counter) market. Trading takes place directly between the two counterparts necessary to make a trade, whether over the telephone or on electronic networks all over the world. The main centres for trading are Sydney, Tokyo, London, Frankfurt and New York. This worldwide distribution of trading centres means that the forex market is a 24-hour market.

What Makes a Currency Trading Tutorial the Best One?

There are many factors that makes a currency trading tutorial the best one and while there are some critical that cannot be avoided, it is more of the value addedness that some of these tutorials might have that might put it above the rest. While there are hundreds of programs and tutorials out there to mention (and there is no space in this article to mention them all), this article will discuss about some of the features that these systems should have to make it not only effective, but a winner as well. Well on of them would be ease of use, because in the end of the day, the entire point of the tutorial is that it should make things easier for you, not confuse you with technical jargon and complicated methods.

A tutorial should be simple and to the point, and you should be able to read things in short points and be able to understand them within minutes. Some of the tutorials that are online are difficult to circumnavigate and understand, so avoid them at all costs. You can normally spot a well designed tutorial by the simple fact that you understand a whole lot within just a few minutes and it should start with the basics. You should have alot of control over the tutorial as well, meaning that you should be able to go back and forth to the points where you didn’t grasp at first and there should be some applications built into the tutorial that allow you to practice on some concepts in real time. Also, some of the better ones online employ the use of a virtual environment or even a game concept to make learning about Forex fun and easy.

The real market can be quite a headache and tutorials need to be simple and fun, and they need to engage you, so I think this is really one of the secret formulas that allow for the newbie, greenhorn beginners to actually understand and get involved in the whole trading game within a few moments. While there is nothing wrong with the traditional approach, many practitioners feel that it sometimes is not enough to capture the imaginations of the new investor to something as dry and as technical as the Forex market. Trading also can be very fun (once you are making money), so it should reflect that to some degree and have some punishment ‘tools and systems’ built in the environment so that the end user will remember his mistake and will not repeat it again.

Of course, in all this, you need to be assured that the system you are using is designed either by experts on the market or by seasoned investors or financial institutions. Once these features are available and you find yourself with the right tutorial on your computer screen, then chances are that you have just come across, probably the best currency trading tutorial on the internet. So take the time to peruse the internet for the right one for you, instead of settling on one that is mediocre. After all, your success in the Forex market depends on it.

Setting A Forex Trading Schedule

Many first-time forex traders hit the market running. They watch various economic calendars and trade voraciously on every release of data, viewing the 24-hours-a-day, five-days-a-week foreign exchange market as a convenient way to trade all day long. Not only can this strategy deplete a trader's reserves quickly, but it can burn out even the most persistent trader. Unlike Wall Street, which runs on normal business hours, the forex market runs on the normal business hours of four different parts of the world and their respective time zones, which means the trading day lasts all day and night.

So what's the alternative to staying up all night long? If traders can gain an understanding of the market hours and set appropriate goals, they will have a much stronger chance at realizing profits within a workable schedule.

Know the Markets
Currency trading is unique because of its hours of operation. The week begins at 6pm EST on Sunday and runs until 4pm on Friday.

But not all hours of the day are equally good for trading. The best time to trade is when the market is most active. When more than one of the four markets are open simultaneously, there will be a heightened trading atmosphere, which means there will be greater fluctuation in currency pairs. When only one market is open, currency pairs tend to get locked in a tight pip spread of roughly 30 pips of movement. Two markets open at once can easily see movement north of 70 pips, particularly when big news is released. (Need a refresher on forex concepts? Common Questions About Currency Trading covers the basics.)

First, here is a brief overview of the four markets (hours in EST):

* New York (open 8am to 5pm): According to "Day Trading the Currency Markets" (2005) by Kathy Lien, New York is the second largest forex platform in the world and is watched heavily by foreign investors because the U.S. dollar is involved in 90% of all trades. Movements in the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) can have an immediate and powerful effect on the dollar. When companies merge and acquisitions are finalized, the dollar can gain or lose value instantly. (Learn one way to predict movements in the NYSE in Which Direction Is The Market Heading?)

* Tokyo (open 7pm to 4am): Tokyo takes in the largest bulk of Asian trading, just ahead of Hong Kong and Singapore. It was the first Asian trading center to open. The best currency pairs to aim for (for traders looking for a lot of action) are USD/JPY, GBP/CHF and GBP/JPY. The USD/JPY is an especially good pair to watch when the Tokyo market is the only market open because of the heavy influence the Bank of Japan has over the market. (Learn about this influence in Profiting From Interventions In Forex Markets, and about currency pairs in Using Currency Correlations To Your Advantage.)

* Sydney (open 5pm to 2am): Sydney is where the trading day officially begins, and while it is the smallest of the mega-markets, it sees a lot of initial action when the markets reopen on Sunday afternoon because individual traders and financial institutions try to stabilize after all the action that may have happened since Friday afternoon.

* London (open 3am to noon): The United Kingdom dominates the currency markets worldwide, and London is its main component. London, known as the trading capital of the world, accounts for roughly 34% of global trading, according to a report by IFS London. The city also has a big impact on currency fluctuations because the Bank of England, which sets interest rates and controls the monetary policy of the GBP, has set up shop in London. Forex trends often originate in London as well, which is a great thing for technical traders to keep in mind. (Learn more about how the central banks impact currency pairs in Interest Rates Matter For Forex Traders.)

Overlaps in Trading
As stated earlier, the best time to trade is when there is an overlap in trading times between open markets. Overlaps equal higher price ranges, resulting in greater opportunities. Here is a closer look at the three overlaps that happen each day:

* U.S./London (8am to noon): The heaviest overlap within the markets occurs in the U.S./London markets. According to Kathy Lien, more than 70% of all trades happen when these markets overlap because the U.S. dollar and the euro are the two most popular currencies to trade. If a trader is looking for the most optimal time to trade (when volatility is high), than this would be the ideal time.

* Sydney/Tokyo (2am to 4am): This time period is not as volatile as the U.S./London overlap, but it still offers a chance to trade in a period of higher pip fluctuation. The ideal currency pair to aim for in this period is the EUR/JPY pair, as these are the two main currencies influenced.

* London/Tokyo (3am to 4am): This overlap sees the least amount of action of the three overlaps because of the time (most U.S.-based traders won't be awake at this time), and the one-hour overlap gives little opportunity to watch large pip changes occur.

(For more in-depth information about what kinds of market activity can be expected in each period, read The Forex Three-Session System.)

News Releases
While understanding the markets and their overlaps can aid a trader in arranging his or her trading schedule, there is one influence that should not be forgotten: the news release.
A big news release has the power to enhance a normally slow trading period. When a major announcement is made regarding economic data - especially when it goes against the predicted forecast - currency can lose or gain value within a matter of seconds.

However, just because dozens of economic releases happen each weekday in all time zones and seemingly affect all currencies, it does not mean a trader needs to be aware of all of them. It is important to prioritize these releases so that the important ones are watched and the lesser ones are simply monitored for surprises. (For more insight, read Trading On News Releases.)

Some of the bigger news releases to watch for include:

* interest rate decisions
* CPI data
* trade deficit
* consumer consumption
* central bank meetings
* consumer confidence
* GDP data
* unemployment rates
* retail trade

For more information on these indicators, read Economic Indicators To Know.

Conclusion
When setting up a trading schedule, it is important to run a strong balance between market overlaps and news releases. Traders looking to enhance profits should aim to trade during more volatile times, while keeping an eye on what economic data is released when. This balance allows part-time and full-time traders the opportunity to set a schedule that gives them peace of mind, knowing that opportunities are not slipping away when they are not watching the markets.

Top 8 Most Tradeable Currencies

Although the foreign exchange market is often billed as a banker's game, currencies can sometimes be great diversification for a portfolio that might have hit a bit of a rut. It's a market that can also offer tremendous opportunity when other global forums enter the doldrums. As a result, knowing a little bit about forex, and the fundamentals behind it, can make significant additions to any trader, investor or portfolio manager's arsenal. Let's take a look at eight currencies every trader or investor should know, along with the central banks of their respective nations. (Absolute beginners might consider a trading course. 1. U.S. Dollar (USD)
Central Bank: Federal Reserve (Fed)
Current Interest Rate Information: http://www.federalreserve.gov/releases/h15/data.htm

The Almighty Dollar
Created in 1913 by the Federal Reserve Act, the Federal Reserve System (also called the Fed) is the central banking body of the U.S. The system is itself headed by a chairman and board of governors, with most of the focus being placed on the branch known as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC). The FOMC supervises open market operations as well as monetary policy or interest rates.

The current committee is comprised of five of the 12 current Federal Reserve Bank presidents and seven members of the Federal Reserve Board, with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York always serving on the committee. Even though there are 12 voting members, non-members (including additional Fed Bank presidents) are invited to share their views on the current economic situation when the committee meets every six weeks. (For more information on the Federal Reserve, read our Federal Reserve tutorial.)

Sometimes referred to as the greenback, the U.S. dollar (USD) is the home denomination of the world's largest economy, the United States. As with any currency, the dollar is supported by economic fundamentals, including gross domestic product, and manufacturing and employment reports. However, the U.S. dollar is also widely influenced by the central bank and any announcements about interest rate policy. The U.S. dollar is a benchmark that trades against other major currencies, especially the euro, Japanese yen and British pound. (For further reading about trading this currency, see Taking Advantage Of A Weak U.S. Dollar.)

2. European Euro (EUR)
Central Bank: European Central Bank (ECB)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.ecb.int/stats/monetary/rates/html/index.en.html

The Dollar's Nemesis
Headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, the European Central Bank is the central bank of the 15 member countries of the Eurozone. In similar fashion to the United States' FOMC, the ECB has a main body responsible for making monetary policy decisions, the Executive Council, which is composed of five members and headed by a president. The remaining policy heads are chosen with consideration that four of the remaining seats are reserved for the four largest economies in the system, which include Germany, France, Italy and Spain. This is to ensure that the largest economies are always represented in the case of a change in administration. The council meets approximately 10 times a year. (Read more about this and other central banks discussed here in Get To Know The Major Central Banks.)

In addition to having jurisdiction over monetary policy, the ECB also holds the right to issue banknotes as it sees fit. Similarly to the Federal Reserve, policy makers can interject at times of bank or system failures. The ECB differs from the Fed in an important area: instead of maximizing employment and maintaining stability of long-term interest rates, the ECB works towards a prime principle of price stability, with secondary commitments to general economic policies. As a result, policymakers will turn their focus to consumer inflation in making key interest rate decisions. (Read more about how central banks control inflation in What Are Central Banks?)

Although the monetary body is somewhat complex, the currency is not. Against the U.S. dollar, the euro (EUR) tends to be a slower currency compared to its colleagues (i.e., the British pound or Australian dollar). On an average day, the base currency can trade between 30-40 pips, with more volatile swings averaging slightly more, at 60 pips wide per day. Another trading consideration is time. Trading in the euro-based pairs can be seen during the London and U.S. sessions (which occur from 2am through 11am EST). (Read more about choosing the optimal time to trade in How To Set A Forex Trading Schedule.)

3. Japanese Yen (JPY)
Central Bank: Bank of Japan (BoJ)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.boj.or.jp/en/index.htm

Technically Complex, Fundamentally Simple
Established as far back as 1882, the Bank of Japan serves as the central bank to the world's second largest economy. It governs monetary policy as well as currency issuance, money market operations and data/economic analysis. The main Monetary Policy Board tends to work toward economic stability, constantly exchanging views with the reigning administration, while simultaneously working toward its own independence and transparency. Meeting 12-14 times a year, the governor leads a team of nine policy members, including two appointed deputy governors.

The Japanese yen (JPY) tends to trade under the identity of a carry trade component. Offering a low interest rate, the currency is pitted against higher-yielding currencies, especially the New Zealand and Australian dollars and the British pound. As a result, the underlying tends to be very erratic, pushing traders to take technical perspectives on a longer-term basis. Average daily ranges are in the region of 30-40 pips, with extremes as high as 150 pips. To trade this currency with a little bit of a bite, focus on the crossover of London and U.S. hours (6am - 11am EST). (Read more about forex carry trades in Currency Carry Trades Deliver.)

4. British Pound (GBP)
Central Bank: Bank of England (BoE)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/

The Queen's Currency
As the main governing body in the United Kingdom, the Bank of England serves as the monetary equivalent of the Federal Reserve System. In the same fashion, the governing body establishes a committee headed by the governor of the bank. Made up of nine members, the committee includes four external participants (appointed by the Chancellor of Exchequer), a chief economist, director of market operations, committee chief economist and two deputy governors.

Meeting every month of the year, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) decides on interest rates and broader monetary policy, with primary considerations of total price stability in the economy. As such, the MPC also has a benchmark of consumer price inflation set at 2%. If this benchmark is compromised, the governor has the responsibility to notify the Chancellor of Exchequer through a letter, one of which came in 2007 as the U.K. CPI rose sharply to 3.1%. The release of this letter tends to be a harbinger to markets, as it increases the probability of contractionary monetary policy. (For more on the role of the CPI, read The Consumer Price Index: A Friend To Investors.)

A little bit more volatile than the euro, the British pound (GBP, also sometimes referred to as "pound sterling" or "cable") tends to trade a wider range through the day. With swings that can encompass 100-150 pips, it isn't unusual to see the pound trade as narrowly as 20 pips. Swings in notable cross currencies tend to give this major a volatile nature, with traders focusing on pairs like the British pound/Japanese yen and the British pound/Swiss franc. As a result, the currency can be seen as most volatile through both London and U.S. sessions, with minimal movements during Asian hours (5pm - 1am EST). (Read more about currency pairs in Using Currency Correlations To Your Advantage.)

5. Swiss Franc (CHF)
Central Bank: Swiss National Bank (SNB)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.snb.ch/en/iabout/stat/statpub/zidea/id/current_interest_exchange_rates

A Banker's Currency
Different from all other major central banks, the Swiss National Bank is viewed as a governing body with private and public ownership. This belief stems from the fact that the Swiss National Bank is technically a corporation under special regulation. As a result, a little over half of the governing body is owned by the sovereign states of Switzerland. It is this arrangement that emphasizes the economic and financial stability policies dictated by the governing board of the SNB. Smaller than most governing bodies, monetary policy decisions are created by three major bank heads who meet on a quarterly basis.

The governing board creates the band (plus or minus 25 basis points) of where the interest rate will reside.

Similar to the euro, the Swiss franc (CHF) hardly makes significant moves in the any of the individual sessions. As a result, look for this particular currency to trade in the average daily range of 35 pips per day. High-frequency volume for this currency is usually pitted for the London session (2am - 8am EST). (For more on the CHF, read Forex: Making Sense Of The Euro/Swiss Franc Relationship.)

6. Canadian Dollar (CAD)
Central Bank: Bank of Canada (BoC)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/rates/interest-look.html

The Loonie
Established by the Bank of Canada Act of 1934, the Bank of Canada serves as the central bank called upon to "focus on the goals of low and stable inflation, a safe and secure currency, financial stability and the efficient management of government funds and public debt." Acting independently, Canada's central bank draws similarities with the Swiss National Bank because it is sometimes treated as a corporation, with the Ministry of Finance directly holding shares. Despite the proximity of the government's interests, it is the responsibility of the governor to promote price stability at an arm's length from the current administration, while simultaneously considering the government's concerns. With an inflationary benchmark of 2-3%, the BoC has tended to remain a shade more hawkish rather than accommodative when it comes to any deviations in prices.

Keeping in touch with major currencies, the Canadian dollar (CAD) tends to trade in similar daily ranges of 30-40 pips. However, one unique aspect about the currency is its relationship with crude oil, as the country remains a major exporter of the commodity. As a result, plenty of traders and investors use this currency as either a hedge against current commodity positions or pure speculation, tracing signals from the oil market. (Read more about the CAD's relationship with oil in Commodity Prices And Currency Movements.)

7. Australian/New Zealand Dollar (AUD/NZD)
Central Bank: Reserve Bank of Australia / Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBA/RBNZ)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.rba.gov.au/ and http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/

Always A Carry Favorite
Offering one of the higher interest rates in the major global markets, the Reserve Bank of Australia has always upheld price stability and economic strength as cornerstones of its long-term plan. Headed by the governor, the bank's board is made up of six members-at-large, in addition to a deputy governor and a secretary of the Treasury. Together, they work toward to target inflation between 2-3%, while meeting nine times throughout the year. In similar fashion, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand looks to promote inflation targeting, hoping to maintain a foundation for prices.

Both currencies have been the focus of carry traders, as the Australian and New Zealand dollars (AUD and NZD) offer the highest yields of the seven major currencies available on most platforms. As a result, volatility can be experienced in these pairs if a deleveraging effect takes place. Otherwise, the currencies tend to trade in similar averages of 30-40 pips, like other majors. Both currencies also maintain relationships with commodities, most notably silver and gold. (Read more about carry trades and the AUD in Turn To The Carry – A Different Flavor Of The Setup.)

8. South African Rand (ZAR)
Central Bank: South African Reserve Bank (SARB)
Current Interest Rate: http://www.reservebank.co.za/

Emerging Opportunity
Previously modeled on the United Kingdom's Bank of England, the South African Reserve Bank stands as the monetary authority when it comes to South Africa. Taking on major responsibilities similar to those of other central banks, the SARB is also known as a creditor in certain situations, a clearing bank and major custodian of gold. Above all else, the central bank is in charge of "the achievement and maintenance of price stability". This also includes intervention in the foreign exchange markets when the situation arises.

Interestingly enough, the South African Reserve Bank remains a wholly owned private entity with more than 600 shareholders that are regulated by owning less than 1% of the total number of outstanding shares. This is to ensure that the interests of the economy precede those of any private individual. To maintain this policy, the governor and 14-member board head the bank's activities and work toward monetary goals. The board meets six times a year.

Seen as relatively volatile, the average daily range of the South African rand (ZAR) can be as high as 1,000 pips. But don't let the wide daily range fool you. When translated into dollar pips, the movements are equivalent to an average day in the British pound, making the currency a great pair to trade against the U.S. dollar (especially when taking into consideration the carry potential). Traders also consider the currency's relationship to gold and platinum. With the economy being a world leader when it comes to exports of both metals, it is only natural to see a correlation similar to that between the CAD and crude oil. As a result, consider the commodities markets in creating opportunities when economic data is scant. (Read more about the rand in The New World Of Emerging Market Currencies.)

Conclusion
As financial markets continue to evolve and grow globally, foreign exchange and currencies will play an increasingly large role in day-to-day transactions. Notional volumes for the market sector are already averaging approximately $3 trillion per day. As a result, whether a conversion for physical trade or a simple portfolio diversification play, currencies continue to offer more opportunities to both the retail and institutional investor.

Forex Currency

The forex market has been rapidly growing since the internet has grown into just about every home. Every person from around the world would love to make a second income, so this is the best place to start. You get to work in your spare time and make a good income. That’s not to say that it is easy. It takes time to learn and time to grow as a trader. One of the best teachers is experience. You’ll learn a lot when you start trading, just remember to stick to my advice and you’ll do fine.

You’re going to have a demo account available to you. As the currency trader, you’re going to want to try this out until you feel comfortable trading. It’s just a very good real simulation, except you don’t have to risk any money. I encourage people to use this until they feel good with their trading. There is no rush to put money in the market because you can lose it pretty fast if you’re not ready.

I think another important factor is cutting your losses. You’re going to have bad trades, just like everyone else. You need to learn to limit their damage. That’s why I set a stop loss point before I make the trade. Basically, you decide if the trade goes down to “x” value, you’ll sell it. It’s a simple and objective way of protecting your bottom line.

Trading Currency Through Online Forex Brokers

Access to foreign exchange (forex), the most extensive market on the planet, is generally through an intermediary known as a forex broker. Similar to a stock broker, these agents can also provide advice on forex trading strategies. This advice to clients often extends to technical analysis and research approaches designed to improve client forex trading performance.

Financial institutions are generally the most influential in the forex market through high-volume, large-value forex currency transactions. Historically, banks enjoyed monopolistic access to the forex markets, but through the Internet, any forex speculator can also enjoy 24 hour access to the market via a forex broker.

Secure web connections today allow many forex traders to work from home, where ready access to news and other technical advice informs decisions on what forex positions to take. Similar moves are being made by stock brokers, who are also moving out of banks and other traditional institutions.

Your needs in the market will influence your choice of forex broker. Online forex brokerage firms, known as houses, provide those new to the forex market with detailed research, advice and simulators to learn how to use their forex trading tools. The experienced online forex trader is catered to by other broking houses, with in-depth advice, but less focus on forex trading instruction based on the assumption that you are familiar with the forex market. To make an informed choice, it is advisable to trial several differing online forex broking houses and their trading tools to find the best fit for your needs.

The Importance of a Good Investment Program on Forex Trading

Have you ever thought about doing a trade globally? Some people might be a bit hesitant to do such a thing, but the opportunity is just waiting for you out there. You don’t actually have to travel outside your country, if that’s your concern. With the the Internet facility, you can in fact do forex trading on a global scale even in your own home, at work, and regardless of your location.

The FX market seems sophisticated, especially to new traders, and they find it rather complicated to go about the trade. But nothing is impossible once you’ve learned the trade. It is a worthwhile venture that you might want to consider even on a tight office schedule.

Being employed in a particular company may not provide you with all the money that you would need to finance your everyday living. Doing some extra work is often advisable specially in today’s times when money is difficult to find. Don´t worry anymore; the FX market is not far from your reach.

Identify your objective upon entering the FX market. This is the first step, so that you will stay focused in your endeavor. Once you’ve set up a goal, you have to do all that is necessary to reach that goal, but it should be in a reasonable manner.

In going through forex trading, you will need an investment program, and a good one. Don’t settle for anything less because a good program is essential to succeed in forex trading.

Most rookies commit the biggest mistake of their lives by availing fraudulent programs. The FX market is an enormous industry, and the fact is that there are many scams and con artists in the Internet, which actually provide useless materials for beginners. This often leads to frustrations of beginners because they’ve already failed even before they get to start the actual trade.

Find a legitimate forex investment program. Although it might require a bit more research, as well as a bit of your time, once you get what you’re looking for, you’re in a good position to start.

You don’t need to settle with expensive programs, nor with programs promising easy and quick profits with less the risk. You must be aware that though the FX market offers a lot of opportunities, it has also a lot of risks related. To become like the pros, you need to learn the forex trading system; and you have to be serious in learning it.

A good program is dynamic. It provides daily advice, manuals, DVD materials, computer disks, and other important forex trading stuffs or resources to turn you into a successful trader. Verify if their previous clients are satisfied with their services, and see if the company has built a good reputation in the business.

Professional traders conceive forex trading as a science, some thinks it’s an art; and to start the real trade, you must undergo a lot of practice. After all, practice makes a perfect trader. Demo accounts are surefire ways to learn and apply the different techniques used in the FX market. After you’ve dominated it, you can proceed to a mini account. Here you can do an actual trade but the risks are minimal. If you think you’re quite ready, then get a regular trading account. This is a highly effective step-by-step process because you get to learn a lot of things while you are practicing. Always maintain calmness, and act like the pros. You are about to make big money, one that you probably never imagined in your entire life.

Forex trading is done on a margin. Margin trading allows you to control more money than what you actually avail. For you to trade one million US dollars, you should have a security deposit worth ten thousand US dollars. This is a typical example with the rate at 1%.

The FX market expands around the globe, so you can trade twenty-four hours a day. If you choose to do margin trading, the spread rate is much lower compared to futures trading. The requirements are also very low.

Get acquainted with all the in and outs of forex trading. Trading globally implies a lot of risk; you must learn to overcome all these risks in order to earn big profits. Get a good forex trading program.

Making Money Using Automated Forex System

Automated forex system is widely used by many professional currency traders. Currency trading has been gaining popularity as an alternative method of making profitable investments after the equities markets have crashed over the past 18 months or so. The continued and rapid development of the concept of theautomated forex system has made currency dealing much easier, and made it possible for many people to participate in the business, who previously would have been excluded through lack of expertise or knowledge.

The great advantage of an automated forex system is that it works on its own. It is programmed to work 24/7 without the need for checking or supervision. The benefits of close monitoring of the trade make it possible for you to maximize to the full the profit on each trade. The system has been programmed to minimize losses while trading in currency, thus minimizing your chances of suffering a drawdown.

The automated forex system is able to carry on transactions independently; the use of human control or monitoring is not needed. Business owners who have used the system can attest to the fact that chances of errors that could spell doom for this venture are highly unlikely.

The automated forex system is programmed to work efficiently by following rules applicable to the trade. As the system is known to work around the clock, your business makes use of every available opportunity to make money. The system is designed to optimize on gains thus helping to create high profit margins. It is possible to trade on multiple systems concurrently using the program.

It is also possible to programme the automated forex system to perform in a manner to suit your currency dealing requirements. You can tailor the system around your trading habits so that it functions in accordance to your needs. This can be altered from time to time so that the system serves you better. These modifications can be made so as to maximise any opportunities in the market at any given time.

There has been a significant increase in the number of people venturing into forex trading. This led to the automation of forex, as nowadays transactions go on 24 hours a day. Automated forex systems have been instrumental in easing up trade which has contributed to the popularity and success of the business.

By using automated forex system, you are able to transact in the world market as soon as orders and sales are generated. Transactions occur almost instantaneously; this is a prerequisite in business dealings. It is advisable to keep a close eye on the business and market conditions even with the system in place. Functions that you should handle to ensure maximum gain in profit margins are determining the currency and its application. Get the value before trading as this determines the value of the final transaction.

Automated forex systems make it possible for every normal, retail investor to profit from forex, including for people in full time work, to embark upon forex trading and carry on with currency trading even with not much little knowledge of how the market operates. The system makes it possible to manage trading accounts as this can be done using the program. There is of course a requirement to learn how the market works, and about the fundamentals of the market and global economy, as this can make it possible to make even larger profits, and to trade multiple markets and currency pairs simultaneously.

The Average Daily Range Of The Major Forex Currency Pairs

If you are trading any kind of intraday forex system, then it's always a good idea to be fully aware of the average daily range of the pair(s) you are trading. This is because you always want to know how much further a pair could realistically move given it's daily average in order to determine where you should set your stop loss and target price.

For instance if a pair has an average daily range of 100 points and during a given day it has been trading in a range of 100 points or more (and is trading at the top of this range with just an hour or so left), then you obviously would not want to be opening a long position because the odds are very much against you.

However if, for example, the range is currently 60 points and there is several hours left of the trading session, then a long position at the top of the range (or vice versa) may well be worth considering given the right circumstances because there is still room for a decent price move to take place.

Anyway I have listed below the average daily trading ranges for all of the major currency pairs for 2008 (I haven't been able to find any figures for 2009 yet). I hope you find the information useful.

GBP/JPY – 348
GBP/CHF – 270
EUR/JPY – 239
GBP/USD – 222
AUD/JPY – 213
CAD/JPY – 201
EUR/USD – 177
NZD/JPY – 175
AUD/USD – 155
USD/JPY – 149
USD/CAD – 148
USD/CHF – 145

Forex Brokers - Make the Right Choice Not A Mistake

With the modern times of mobile communication, it is not unusual to find hidden in a home a trader or a broker who is doing their Forex Trading from the comfort of their own home. Today to be a forex trader all that you require is a computer setup to multi screen investing servers, the number of the casual or evens serious home based forex traders has grown a great deal of late and this is because of the internet and the popularity of certain commodity trades.

Today, this article will discuss about the Forex market, and how you can find a great online Forex broker when you do decide to jump on the wagon and become a Forex Trader. Most of the Forex Brokers today offer the ability to be able to trade online, forex trade over the phone, or forex trade from you mobile phone.

With the growth of the virtual Forex Trader, we have seen an explosion of online forex brokerages on the internet in the almost predictable economic elastic demand and supply. Today we are seeing more individuals turning to commodity trading as a viable source of second or even third income, brokerages and financial firms all over the world have responded by extending their services to the modern technology world. Before you choose which firm and which broker to choose, there are few things you need to do.

First step is to find the black list of online Forex brokers and those that have a bad reputation. There are a few collectives that collect a list of names of individuals and companies (including all their aliases and permutations) and place them upon a compiled list for everyone to refer to. If that is not enough, you must also check your local finance and governing body and run a list of potential brokerages and companies you want to join with them - you never know what you might find. Deal with well established companies that have strong regulation. Recently the CFD FX REPORT has researched all the online Forex Brokers and have come up with who they believe to the Best Forex Broker.

Do not be swept off your feet by a long list of credentials if you do not know what they mean or where they even came from in the first place. Be wary of customer testimonials that are written on the website itself, as these can doctored or fabricated.

Use a company that has great references, and has good client testimonials. Check also for longevity, the more years a broker and his company have been around, the more chances that it is a legitimate and viable source of investing advice. Always be careful where you place your money and it is very, very important that you choose a good online broker that is both legitimate and has the needs of your finances at heart. You must feel comfortable with this broker, remember a bad broker can make you BROKER.

The CFD FX REPORT is a real time trading tool that offers clients free trading reports, with trading ideas, stock market and forex market education as well helping them with. Also if you are looking for a Forex Broker, then feel free to visit our broker section as we recently reviewed all the forex brokers and have found the best on the market.

Knowing the Ins and Outs of Chandelier Exit

Have you ever heard of a stop placement strategy that trails stop based on previous 'high' points? It is called Chandelier exit as it hangs down from the high point or the ceiling of our trade, just as a chandelier hangs from a room ceiling. The distance, which is usually calculated from the high point to the trailing stop; could also be calculated in dollars or in contract based points. However, the value of this trailing stop moves upward very promptly as higher highs is reached.

The Chandelier Exit, which has a trailing stop from either the highest high of the trade or the highest close of the trade, is best measured in units of Average True Range (ATR). One of the many factors leading to use ATR for measuring the distance from the high to our stop is that, it is pertinent across markets and is adaptive to changes in unpredictability.

The essence of this calculative measure is that, even on expansion and contraction of trading ranges, our stop will automatically adjust and move to the apt level, thereby, constantly staying in tune with changing market conditions. Chandelier Exit is one of the most tried exit methodology used across a varied portfolio of futures markets to generate profitable test results.

It is imperative that the changes in unpredictability can curtail or stretch the distance to the actual stop, since the highs used to hang the Chandelier move only upward. However, in order to witness less fluctuation in the stop distance, you can use a longer moving average to calculate Average True Range. In other ways, shorter moving average is required, in case you want the stop placement to be more adaptive to fluctuating market conditions.

When short averages for the ATR is used; brief periods of small ranges can bring the stops too close, abnormally resulting in premature exit. To avoid this, you can have a short and highly adaptive ATR while calculating a short average and a longer average and using the average that produces the widest stop.

Although Chandelier Exit differs from Channel Exit (which trails a stop based on previous 'low' points), the combination of both, where the trade is initialized by the trailing Channel Exit and then adding the Chandelier Exit, after the price has moved away from the entrance point, will help in making the open trade lucrative. Here the Channel Exit is fastened at a low point and does not move up as new profits are accomplished. At the same time, it is necessary to have the Chandelier Exit at the right position so that the exits are never too far away from the high point of the trade.

The fundamentals behind combining the exit techniques, Channel and Chandelier exit is that, while Channel Exit as a suitable stop that very steadily rises at the commencement of the trade, switching over to Chandelier Exit is necessary to ensure better exit that protects more of our profit. This feature makes Chandelier Exit one of the most sought after rational exits from the profitable trades.

Why do Forex Trading?

So.. you want to make lots of money in forex trading? Well, before you get your feet wet....let me refresh your mind why forex trading is such a hot money maker...

The cash/spot FOREX markets have certain unique attributes that offer an unmatched potential for profitable trading in any market condition or any stage of the business cycle. It leaves one to wonder why bother in the first place?

Forex trading offers people who trade:

A 24-hour market: A forex trader has the chance to take advantage of all of the profitable market conditions at any time; which means that there is no waiting for the start like the New York Stock exchange.

Highest liquidity Possible: The FOREX market is the most liquid market in the world. That means that a trader can enter or exit the market whenever they want during almost any market condition minimal execution barriers or risk and no daily trading limit.

High leverage ratio: It has a leverage ratio of up to 400 is normal when compared to a leverage ratio of 2 in the equity markets. Of course, this makes trading in the cash/spot forex market awkward a swell because it makes the risk of the down side loss much higher in the same way that it makes the profit potential on the upside much prettier.

Low cost per transaction: The retail transaction cost is actually less than 0.1% under the normal market conditions. At larger dealers, the spread could be less than 5 pips, and may expand a great deal in fast moving markets.

Always a good market: A trade in the FOREX market means selling or buying one currency against another. In essence, a bull market or a bear market for a currency is defined in terms of the outlook for value against other currencies. If the outlook is positive, you get a bull market where a trader profits by buying the currency against other currencies.

Inter-bank market: The foundation of the FOREX market consists of a global network of dealers that communicate and trade with their clients through electronic networks and telephones. There are no organized exchanges like in futures that are there to serve as a central location to facilitate transactions the way the New York Stock Exchange serves the equity markets.

No one can corner the market: The FOREX market is so large and has so many participants that no single trader, even a central bank, can control the market price for an extended period of time.

It is not completely Unregulated: The FOREX market is seen as an unregulated market although the operations of major dealers like commercial banks in money centers are regulated under the banking laws.

For the average person who is willing to get into forex trading, this market is just a better bet. With it being so wide open like it is, you have a higher gross potential than with any other trade type.

The Perfect Forex Trading System

Trading the Forex market has became very popular in the last few years. But how difficult is it to achieve success in the Forex trading arena? Or let me rephrase this question, how many traders achieve consistent profitable results trading the Forex market? Unfortunately very few, only 5% of traders achieve this goal.

One of the main reasons of this is because Forex Traders focus in the wrong information to make their trading decisions and totally forget about the most important factor: Price behavior.

Most Forex trading systems are made off technical indicators (a moving average (MA) crossover, overbought/oversold conditions in an oscillator, etc.) But what are technical indicators? They are just a series of data points plotted in a chart; these points are derived from a mathematical formula applied to the price of any given currency pair. In other words, it is a chart of price plotted in a different way that helps us see other aspects of price.

There is an important implication on this definition of technical indicators. The fact that the readings obtained from them are based on price action. Take for instance a long MA crossover signal, the price has gone up enough to make the short period MA crossover the long period MA generating a long signal. Most traders see it as ‘the MA crossover made the price go up,’ but it happened the other way around, the MA crossover signal occurred because the price went up. Where I’m trying to get here is that at the end, price behavior dictates how an indicator will act, and this should be taken into consideration on any trading decision made.

Trading decisions based on technical indicators without taking price action into consideration will give us less accurate results. For example, again a long signal generated by a MA crossover as the market approaches an important resistance level. If the price suddenly starts to bounce back off that important level there is no point on taking this signal, price action is telling us the market doesn’t want to go up. Most of the time, under this circumstances, the market will continue to fall down, disregarding the MA crossover.

Don’t get me wrong here, technical indicators are a very important aspect of trading. They help us see certain conditions that are otherwise difficult to see by watching pure price action. But when it comes to pull the trigger, price action incorporation into our Forex trading system will definitely put the odds in our favor, it will generate higher probability trades.

So, how to create a perfect forex trading system?

First of all, you need to make sure your trading system fits your trading personality; otherwise you will find it hard to follow it. Every trader has different needs and goals, thus there is no system that perfectly fits all traders. You need to make your own research on various trading styles and technical indicators until you find a concept that perfectly works for you. Make sure you know the nature of whatever technical indicator used.

Secondly, incorporate price action into your system. So you only take long signals if the price behavior tells you the market wants to go up, and short signals if the market gives you indication that it will go down.

Third, and most importantly, you need to have the discipline to follow your Forex trading system rigorously. Try it first on a demo account, then move on to a small account and finally when feeling comfortably and being consistent profitable apply your system in a regular account.

5 Forex Trading Basics To Attain Financial Freedom

With the amazing growth of the forex market, you are going to see an astounding amount of traders lose all their money. Unfortunately, they haven’t followed the simple steps I have laid out for you. Go through these steps and give yourself the greatest opportunity to achieve your goals.

1. Have Faith In Yourself

To reach the level of elite forex trader, you must trust in yourself and your forex trading education. You must be willing to make all your trading decisions, instead of relying on someone else’s thoughts or ability (or lack of). Of course, you will prepare yourself fully before every risking any money.

2. Accept Your Learning Curve

Unless you are a veteran trader, you will lose money trading the Forex market. This is a near certainty. I don’t say this to talk you out of trading. In fact, quite the opposite. You will be trading against others that fall to this reality day in and day out. You, however, will not risk a dime until you have learned the skills you need to make money trading the forex.

3. Decide What Type of Trader You Are

There are many ways to trade the forex. They range from very active to very patient. You must decide which style suits you best. The best time to learn this about yourself is while you are trading a demo account. There is no need to allow your learning curve to cost you money.

4. Get Educated

Education is the shortest path to elite forex trading. Regardless of your ultimate goals, you will reach them quicker with a great forex trading education. Take some time to review different options before deciding on who to trust with your forex trading education needs. A forex seminar will help shorten your learning curve drastically.

5. Continue to Get Educated

In order to achieve and retain elite forex trading skills, you must constantly be adding to you knowledge base. Your education should never end. In fact, one of the key points to look for in an elite forex trading course is ongoing education. It’s nice to have an ongoing relationship with the person/people helping you to achieve your goals.
What separates an elite forex trader from all others is their desire and ability to be independent. Many traders are willing to follow signals, systems, strategies, or anything else you may call them. By taking this approach, however, these traders are only as good as the people they follow.

An elite forex trader will lead. Their decisions will be calculated and analyzed to near perfection. They will make decisions with no hesitation, and handle the growth of their account in a predetermined, intelligent fashion. Take your trading to their level and you will never look back.
